MTG Sphinxes

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,
For today's post, we wanted to a focus on a rather mysterious Magic: the Gathering creature subteype - Sphinxes.  Why? We had recently started to put together a Sharuum the Hegemon artifact EDH / Commander build and realised that we did not know too much about this critter type.

There are about 25 cards in the game currently with the most recent printing going to Isperia, Supreme Judge, the legendary Azorius guild leader in Return to Ravnica.  Whether you favor this new iteration or the previous Dissension printing Isperia the Inscrutable (the guild  champion at the time) is all a matter of personal taste.  Altough we have about a dozen or so Sphinx right now, we thinkg we'll pop by MTG Mint Card to pick up a few more for the beginning of a new MTG sub-collection.
When we were kids, our very first introduction to a sphinx was in the play "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles where a nasty Sphinx had taken up residence near the gates of Thebes and would OmNomNom all who did not answer her riddle correctly - kinda like that epic duel between Bilbo Baggins and Gollum in that cave under the Misty Mountains.  Anywhoos, the Sphinx asks Oedipus "What is the creature that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three in the evening?", which is correctly answered as 'one of those new pokemons'.
Righto - here's a quick run-down of Sphinxes (or sphinges) : These are large, powerful creatures with lion-like bodies, human faces, and feathered wings. Some of Magic: the Gathering Sphinxes will give dragons a run for their money. Sphinxes are known for their cunning and vast intellect, and sometime do not converse other than providing riddles. We suggest you try to speak only in riddles for a week and find out how many friends you have at the end of it.

Sphinxes are typically blue, although some may be white and/or black. Sphinxes can be found on the worlds of Dominaria, Ravnica, Alara, Zendikar, and Mirrodin. Sphinx is the marquee creature for the color blue.
