Friday Tumblr Time

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

Big weekend for Magic: the Gathering players around the world as the latest core set, Magic 2014 will be landing in local gaming stores near you.  If you are unable to get to the M14 PreRelease this weekend, there is always the Friday Night Magic M14 Launch next weekend.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to get down to OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario for either the PreRelease or the Launch as we are heading up north to camp out under the stars (sounds awful doesn't it), so expect us back on-line in another week.  Shortly after we return we should have our pre-orders delivered from MTG Mint Card, so we are definitely excited.

It's that time to drop by our sister site MTG Realm on Tumblr to catch up with the latest Magic: the Gathering news, spoilers and rumours as well as a few helpful posts to hopefully assist you at the PreRelease this weekend - let's go!

Magic: the Gathering - WTF is a Cockatrice ?!?

MTG now has two cards with this creature type
Cockatrice - a flying green creature with with conditional deathtouch prints in Limited Alpha / Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Fourth, Fifth and Time Spiral.  A bit similar to Thicket Basilisk except without the feathers.
Deathgaze Cockatrice - a flying black creature with deathtouch newly minted for Magic 2014. Rulak (a bog guide) has this to say about Cockatrice - “Sometimes I come across a stone finger or foot and I know I’m in cockatrice territory."

So what the hell is it?
A cockatrice is a mythical beast, essentially a hybrid critter, two-legged dragon with a rooster’s head.  Its reputed magical abilities include turning people to stone or killing them outright by glaring at them similar to your mother-in-law’s gaze.  In this respect, they are related to Gorgons or Basilisks. The weasel is reported to be the only animal that is immune to the deathly glance of a cockatrice.

Aside : This critter reminds me of the Krafayis from the Doctor Who episode ‘Vincent and the Doctor’.
