Theros Gifts

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We trust that all had an amazing Theros PreRelease weekend.  Here at MTG Realm, we attended the Friday midnight PreRelease event at OMG! Games in Barrie, Ontario where approximately 45 players gamed from just shortly after midnight to almost 5 in the morning.  After that event, we most definitely wanted to get more of Theros sealed at the Satuday and Sunday events but unfortunately just could not make it due to some other things which popped up.  That's OK we guess - that'll just mean some extra cash for some MTG singles at MTG Mint Card and to grab boosters when Theros officially releases this Friday the 27th.

Speaking of which, we came across an image posted on the interwebs - that Gift from the Gods poster for the Theros Release which is actually a very clever puzzle from Wizards of the Coast.  SPOILER ALERT ! - If you want to solve the poster puzzle for yourself, please do not read on.

Gift from the Gods | Theros Release | September 27-29, 2013

At Theros Release Weekend, which starts with Friday Night Magic that first evening, you’ll see a unique and mysterious poster emblazoned with the Hero’s Path symbol. This poster is a puzzle sent from the gods as a message to their chosen Hero.

Enter this ancient temple and gaze upward, for the barrier between the mortal world and the realm of the gods is thin here: you can see the starlight shining through, connecting their worlds to ours.

Indeed, the gods have emblazoned a sacred message, dotted amongst the stars themselves, that only the cleverest of mortals will be able to interpret.

Doing so correctly will allow you to identify a specific creature from the Theros set.

Given the poster image comparisons, we think it fairly clear that tracing the stars you get " 5 / 7 ".  Oddly, there is only one Theros card with power / toughness stats with that.  Yep - it's Erebos, God of the Dead - and given the flavor / storyline, we think this may be the antagonist pitted against the protagonist team of Heliod, God of the Sun and Elspeth, Sun's champion.

~
Next up - it appears someone had finally snapped and posted an image of the Game Day playmat.  If you happen to place first at the Theros Game Day event on the weekend of 19th October, you can score this pretty slick playmat featuring art from the card Vanquish the Foul, illustrated by the amazing Eric Deschamps.

Theros PreRelease Event

~
Happy Saturday MTG peeps,

Magic: the Gathering players around the world are crammed into local game stores cracking packs of Theros, the latest set from Wizards of the Coast.  Here at MTG Realm we attended the midnight pre-release event at OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario, Canada-Land where a good crowd of about 45 gamers played from midnight to almost 5:00 am this morning.  We were half expecting some of the players to come dressed in togas to get the full experience going with this ancient Greek mythology-themed set.

Anywhoos - let's have a look at this short video from the PreRelease - -

~

We went with the white 'Path of Honor' prerelease pack and were quite happy to predominantly white in our booster packs

~

Our MVP for the evening was Evangel of Heliod which drops 1/1 white soldier creature tokens commensurate with our devotion to white - and - more than once we also had the Spear of Heliod out to anthem 'em up.

We performed not too badly going 2 wins 2 losses.  The first loss we'll blame on silly game mistakes and the second loss down to draws and mana.  All in all, a great time had.

Theros PreRelease Packs

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Magic: the Gathering fans are gearing up for the big Theros pre-release party this weekend and we think game stores are gonna be packed.  Tonight, we here at MTG Realm will likely be finalising our singles pre-order to MTG Mint Card, with Friday Night Magic tomorrow, and then two solid days of Theros PreRelease.  We'll likely only be leaving OMG! Games & Collectibles here in Barrie, Ontario to shower and shave.

Some players we've talked to just cannot decide which Theros PreRelease pack to go with this weekend, while others want to play all the colors.  If you are still sitting on the fence as to which color to go with, here's a set of videos from Derium'ss CCGs in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio who has kindly presented a show 'n' tell of each - have a looky-loo.  Give 'em some link love to their Facebook page and their Twitter y'awll.
~
EDIT - 7:00 PM EST 9.19.2013 - It appears that the videos have been removed or set to private now.  We suspect that Wizards may have directed correspondence to Derium.
Deriums Review: MTG Theros Path of Honor (White) prerelease pack

Deriums Review: MTG Theros Path of Battle (Red) prerelease pack

Deriums Review: MTG Theros Path of Might (Green) prerelease pack

Deriums Review: MTG Theros Path of Ambition (Black) prerelease pack

Deriums Review: MTG Theros Path of Wisdom prerelease pack

~

All the seed packs seem to follow a similar pattern - - Each has 11 commons (5 off-color, and 6 on-color, one of which was the same in both pre-release packs of each color).  It has  3 uncommons. 1 on-color, 1 off-color, and 1 of either a multicolor or off-color and 1 rare/mythic, which can be multicolor.

Just a an additional note - Each prerelease seed booster has a playable promo. It has a primary color but isn't monocolor. Can open a God but no other mythic.

Theros Events

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

For today's post, we wanted to provide a handy-dandy reference post you can refer back to to check out all the game play events for the very next Magic: the Gathering set, Theros.  As many of you know, your local gaming store is usually anything but dull / boring and certainly not while we are at our local gamery shoppe, OMG! Friday Tumblr Time

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

Big weekend for Magic: the Gathering players around the world as the latest core set, Magic 2014 will be landing in local gaming stores near you.  If you are unable to get to the M14 PreRelease this weekend, there is always the Friday Night Magic M14 Launch next weekend.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to get down to OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario for either the PreRelease or the Launch as we are heading up north to camp out under the stars (sounds awful doesn't it), so expect us back on-line in another week.  Shortly after we return we should have our pre-orders delivered from MTG Mint Card, so we are definitely excited.

It's that time to drop by our sister site MTG Realm on Tumblr to catch up with the latest Magic: the Gathering news, spoilers and rumours as well as a few helpful posts to hopefully assist you at the PreRelease this weekend - let's go!

Magic: the Gathering - WTF is a Cockatrice ?!?

MTG now has two cards with this creature type
Cockatrice - a flying green creature with with conditional deathtouch prints in Limited Alpha / Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Fourth, Fifth and Time Spiral.  A bit similar to Thicket Basilisk except without the feathers.
Deathgaze Cockatrice - a flying black creature with deathtouch newly minted for Magic 2014. Rulak (a bog guide) has this to say about Cockatrice - “Sometimes I come across a stone finger or foot and I know I’m in cockatrice territory."

So what the hell is it?
A cockatrice is a mythical beast, essentially a hybrid critter, two-legged dragon with a rooster’s head.  Its reputed magical abilities include turning people to stone or killing them outright by glaring at them similar to your mother-in-law’s gaze.  In this respect, they are related to Gorgons or Basilisks. The weasel is reported to be the only animal that is immune to the deathly glance of a cockatrice.

Aside : This critter reminds me of the Krafayis from the Doctor Who episode ‘Vincent and the Doctor’.

Dragon's Maze Prerelease

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Sorry - not a very long post today but we had to share something rather interesting WotC Monty shared on the Mothersite yesterday.  Check this out . . .
~
All Ten Guilds

When you walk in to a Dragon's Maze Prerelease, you'll get to select your favorite guild from among all of the ten guilds of Ravnica! That guild pack will have a secret allied guild, which will share one color with your chosen guild, and also always be from the opposite set as your chosen guild.

So let’s look at an example: You’re a Dimir player, so that’s the guild you pick. That guild pack might have Return to Ravnica's Azorius as its secret ally (although it could also be Izzet, Rakdos, or Golgari). That guild pack would have four Dragon's Maze booster packs, one Gatecrash Dimir guild Prerelease pack, and one Return to Ravnica Azorius guild Prerelease pack. The two guild packs will be the same as they were in their original Prerelease, but will not have that set's Prerelease promo for those guilds. The guild Prerelease packs will not contain a Spindown life counter, sticker, or guild welcome letter.

One Prerelease Card
Everyone who plays in a Dragon's Maze Prerelease will get the same alternate-art promo foil card, while supplies last. This card will not be playable in your Prerelease deck.
The Maze
There's also a maze! Players (that's you) will work collectively to advance their chosen guild through the Implicit Maze each round. There are prizes for each guild that gets all the way through the maze, and special prizes for the first guild that does it. And when the maze is completed, all participating players will receive a premium (foil) basic land promo card!
No Basic Land in Dragon's Maze Booster Packs

Wait... that sounds kind of negative. Let's rephrase it.
Dragon's Maze Booster Packs All Contain Nonbasic Lands

That's better! The fifteenth card in all Dragon's Maze packs isn't basic land; it's nonbasic land. All ten guildgates will be showing up (with the Dragon's Maze expansion symbol), as will all ten shocklands from Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash (with their Return to Ravnica or Gatecrash symbols). You are about half as likely to open a shockland in Dragon's Maze as in Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash and, since this is for all ten shocklands rather than five, that means you are about a quarter as likely to open a specific one. There's also a mythic rare land from Dragon's Maze that will show up there sometimes!

Sooo . . . . we're getting two different guild packs and four Gatecrash packs.  This sort of set-up seems like fun times to ensue at the PreRelease - who knows - maybe sealed deck construction might even be a little less challenging than that with Return to Ravnica and Gatecrash.  The non-basic land line that Monty delivered has us intrigued.

Oddly enoughthe rumour mill churned out an interesting theory which states that this may be a mythic rare land which essentially provides an alternate win condition should you control all ten Guildgates - weird, interesting and cool all in one we think.

Anywhoos - we'll be expecting our preorder from MTG Mint Card fairly soon and will most definitely locking ourselves in the basement to modify existing builds and leverage new strategies.  See y'awl at the game tables!

Gatecrash PreRelease

Wow!  What a great weekend we had at the Gatecrash PreRelease.  Magic: the Gathering players around the world were able to play for the first time with all the very cool new cards and from what we heard from the gamers at OMG!
