Promo Round-Up

Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Although it was pretty dang cold, altogether it was a rather nice weekend here. Kicking the weekend off on Friday, we went to Friday Night Magic at our local card shop, OMG! Games (near the College here in Barrie, Ontario) and went 3 wins / 2 losses with a funky Bant Hexproof build, taking us to 7th place which meant some packs and this month's FNM promo (see below). Attendance was not the best at all (likely due to the horrible weather) with only 20 or so players. We played agains Duncan, Curt, Brayden, Korie and Ben and in-between rounds brought along a 'fun' experimental deck to see just how well it would perform. One observation we made - we most definitely need to pick up some additional non-basic lands from MTG Mint Card. We did a bunch of yard / house work on Saturday / Sunday, got in a few games at the kitchen table and brewed up a few against the grain decks. We also popped on online throughout the weekend to catch up with the big MTG Grand Prix tournament in Santiago. Congratulations to player Luis Navas who gamed with a Rakdos Aggro (Exava / Mogis's Marauder / Xathrid Necromancer / etc.).

Theros League
The League is a seasonal Magic: The Gathering tournament organized by the DCI. The ongoing, five-week tournament is played in local game and hobby stores around the world, a month after each a new card set is released. This sealed deck tournament follows up on Game Day events and uses the Standard format. Check your local gaming store to see when your league starts - If it already has, chances are they may have another league starting up again. The Theros League promo is a lovely Soldier token with art form Zoltan Boros which now brings us to 3 different white soldier tokens and 1 red soldier token.

Friday MTG Miscellany

Happy Friday MTG peeps,

Currently in our fair city of Barrie, Ontario, the last 24-hours had provided a great and wondrous variety of every meteorological condition - rain, sun, snow, wind and some very brief respites of warmth. This has not deterred us in our staunch commitment to get down to OMG! Games, the local gaming store tonight for Friday Night Magic. We currently have three builds ready for standard, a G/W enchant, a B/W midrange, and some unorganised weird R/G creature-centric thingy whose punch line is Ruric-Thar. Anywhoos - we still don't know which one to grab on the way out.

Righto - Onto today's post to the MTG Realm blog - First up - January's FNM promo was revealed over on the mothersite today - Warleader's Helix! We have a feeling that this card will see increased play at FNM in the coming weeks. The new art by Wesley Burt shown with the normal art from Greg Staples below -

Zendikar - The Makindi Trenches
The Ondu mainland is crisscrossed by a maze of high-walled canyons called the Makindi Trenches. The canyons represent sheer drops down hundreds of feet, some terminating in whitewater rivers, others ending in bare rock. Mana-fueled winds howl through the canyons at odd intervals, making it important for climbers and builders to attach their instruments carefully to the cliff walls.

Magic: the Gathering - with rules clear as mud
The timing rules changes (effects using the ‘stack’ which replaced the old ‘batch’ system during the games) didn’t go into effect for a month after Classic Sixth Edition came out, which gave people time to get used to the idea of the game changing. To help with the transition, Bill Rose explained the rules in this visual representation of the current timing rules in his “Murk Dwellers” column of Duelist magazine #9 (about the same time that ‘Homelands’ hit card shop shelves). Magic: the Gathering - IDW MTG Comics

Apparently I have a comic book addiction thingy for IDW Publishing’s Magic the Gathering series. The original series, Spell Thief series, Path of Vengeance series, and the first in the new Theros series.
I swear that eventually, one day, I’ll be ripping off the plastic and actually putting some of these very cool cards into decks … yeah … one day.

FNM Report 10-04-2013

Happy Saturday MTG peeps,

We wanted to do a quick follow-up to yesterday's post about the new Magic: the Gathering standard constructed environment and which direction we are taking our 60-card stack at FNM to deliver a polished product for Theros Game Day.

As misfortune would have it, the green / white Selesnya aggro strategy we had hatched out earlier was placed in jeopardy when it was time to head off to the store and we realised we were short a few cards (traded / lost / mischievous gnomes?). With only about an hour before OMG! Games started the first match, we scrambled and put together this list :

4x Elvish Mystic, 3x Soldier of the Pantheon, 3x Fleecemane Lion, 2x Voice of Resurgence, 4x Selesnya Charm, 4x Witchstalker, 3x Fiendslayer Paladin, 3x Ajani, Caller of the Pride, 3x Loxodon Smiter, 4x Unflinching Courage, 4x Advent of the Wurm, 3x Temple GArden, 3x Selesnya Guildgate, 9x Forest, 8x Plains.

At OMG! Games, the crowd was lighter than usual with about 27 players. First match was lost rather quickly to Chris who had played a blue / black strategy. The next four matches (to Rob, TJ, Hunter, and Simon) did go rather well, usually going to game three with wins all going to our Selesnya build. There seemed to be quite a few control decks (like that delicious hand shown above with Supreme Verdict, Detention Sphere, Swan Song, and Azorious Charm) in the field but that certainly does not mean the same kind of showing next week. For now, we're going to pick up a few extra missing singles from MTG Mint Card and stick with aggro for the next several weeks.

Coming in 4th place, we scored five Theros packs and the Friday Night Magic foil promo card Ghor-Clan Rampager.

What was rather awesome was that we were actually looking to acquire (trade / buy) 3 of the 5 cards we were able to pull - Xenagos, Thoughtseize, and Temple of Abandon. Not too shabby.

Post Theros FNM

Tonight we here at MTG Realm along with thousands of other Magic: the Gathering players will be heading out to local gaming stores to take part in a Friday Night Magic event. We'll be at OMG! Games (best card shop in central Ontario) will be our first time to the store since Theros, the latest MTG set hit shelves worldwide. Tonight was particularly difficult to prepare a new standard constructed stack to play since a number of our fav cards from Innistrad block rotated out of the format.

We received our big pile of MTG Theros singles pre-ordered from MTG Mint Card and it sat on the table for a few days while we attempted to come up with a 60-card strategy. Where we finally began to make progress was with which decks were performing good in Return to Ravnica block constructed and decided to go with a Green / White Selesnya aggro build - aggro is a good default choice in the first few weeks of the new metagame. There are a lot of powerful creatures in these colours and building it is fairly straightforward. We'll eventually move on to some other build latter but here's what we have . . .

Some of the decisions here was based upon the local metagame, our budget, as well as what cards we actually own. The new Theros cards now in the Selesnya vehicle are Soldier of the Panteon (solid choice after a 'gold' multi-colour block like Return to Ravnica), and Fleecemane Lion (hexproof / indestructibly after monstrous is pretty sweet - especially if we encounter any of the new 'god' cards). We'll continue to work tweaks on this over the next few weeks (considering adding Boon Satyr) until the games shifts again after which we really want to brew something up with B/W control or R/W aggro.

Theros Legendary Enchantment Artifact

Yesterday we saw another somewhat suspicious spoiler for Theros, the next large Magic: the Gathering set due out this fall. There have been a handfull of Theros cards 'spoiled' which proved fake. For this reason, we here at MTG Realm take a rather cautious approach when reporting. Anywhoos - yesterday's spoiler via Facebook / Reddit did prove worthy and we are fairly certain we have a winner - again, we caution readers to only rely upon official previews over at the mothersite.

Yesterday, Reddit user SMDC informed the gaming community that a Facebook friend had this update - "...we noticed that the Theros release promo was spoiled on the very bottom left of the Experiment One Friday Night Magic promo poster; I forgot the name of the card... but I remember what it does!". He went on to provide some card details and what caught a lot of MTG rumor mongers off guard was the card type / subtype - 'Legendary Enchantment Artifact'. Wow - that is one fat Chalupa with ALL the toppings - cant we squeeze another name on this type line if we tried with a shoehorn. We'll be at the FNM event at OMG! Games here is Barrie tomorrow, so hopefully they also have the same poster for our confirmation. The image is reported to be at the bottom of a Friday Night Magic poster hanging up in a local gaming store. Anywhoos - long story short, SMDC came through for the community and delivered pics. The first bit of weirdness here is that with yesterday's Planeswalker's Guide to Theros, we were intorducted to Dekella, the spear used / associated with Thessa, blue-aligned god of the sea. The name and the art certainly is correct - a bident (not a trident) and then we go off the deep end with a legendary artifact enchantment with tap abilities. We admit we kind of got excited about the potential in Theros to push the existing Pillow Fort build(Enchantments and Sphere of Safety), and then we had the sads - so much easier to blow this card up with Naturalize (kills artifacts or enchantments). We will just have to wait and see if this card really is the rumored Theros Release promo, and how this will interact with the gods and heroes in Theros.

Also - a reminder - the THEROS Early Bird Special is closing today at MTG Mint Card - so get in there now.

For today's post, we wanted to provide a handy-dandy reference post you can refer back to to check out all the game play events for the very next Magic: the Gathering set, Theros. As many of you know, your local gaming store is usually anything but dull / boring and certainly not while we are at our local gamery shoppe, OMG! Games in Barrie. Check the links off to the mothersite for the 4.1.1. on each event. OHH - and check out the new Theros art 'spoiler' in the League event graphic - yep - looks just like one of the wonders of the ancient world - the Colossus of Rhodes. Wizards of the Coast, along with that card shop in your neck 'o' the woods has a host of upcoming events and programs where you can n3rd out and get your fill of the newest MTG set coming this fall - let's have a looky-loo . . .

PreRelease (September 21-22, 2013)
Prerelease tournaments (or prereleases) are events held one week before the release of an expansion set. Theros features the first quest of the Hero's Path: Choose a Path. The Hero Prerelease Pack contains a spindown life counter, a Hero Card unique to a players' chosen path, one of five quiz activity cards, five Theros boosters, a special seeded booster featuring cards appropriate for that player's chosen path and one of the five playable Prerelease promo cards.

Launch / Release (September 27, 2013)
Launch parties or Release events were events held after the release of an expansion set. These are held at a Friday Night Magic event.

Game Day (October 19-20, 2013)

Magic Game Day is a seasonal Magic: The Gathering tournament organized by the DCI. The tournament is played in local game and hobby stores around the world, a month after each a new card set is released. Game Day events are Standard format tournament. On Game Day, you'll see Theros Hero Cards, which are a new special type of card for players to collect and use when facing Challenge Decks at Game Day. Game Day will also include a chance to play with or against a 'Face the Hydra' challenge deck.

Path of the Hero
This is a multiple Theros event game play experience where players become heroes of Theros and participate in nine in-store quests that include puzzles, battles, and rewards; all of which happen at your store.

League
The League is a seasonal Magic: The Gathering tournament organized by the DCI. The ongoing, five-week tournament is played in local game and hobby stores around the world, a month after each a new card set is released. As it is Friday, and we have our M14 singles now in hand from MTG Mint Card, we're heading off to Friday Night Magic this evening to OMG! Games here in Barrie and try to get to Top 8 to get one of those lovely Rakdos Cackler FNM promos.
