Flicker Golems

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Since the Avacyn Restored spoilers 'n' previews were delivered, we here at MTG Realm have had a fascination for the new 'flicker' mechanic.  Flickering is the nickname for exiling a permanent, then returning it to the battlefield.  Of course when you do this, the permanent is treated as a new card that just entered the battlefield and comes along with any 'enter the battlefield' effects.  This mechanic appears on several Avacyn Restored white and blue cards, including an artifact.  Cards in the Avacyn Restored set which is blessed with this mechanic are Cloudshift, Conjurer's Closet, Deadeye Navigator, Ghostly Flicker, Nephalia Smuggler, and Restoration Angel.

Flicker is not a new tech at all.  We've seen it on Turn to Mist and Mistmeadow Witch from Shadowmoor and the very popular Momentary Blink from Time Spiral.  This mechanic is very useful for Magic the Gathering players as it will remove all counters (negative, positve, as well as 'charge' counters) including auras (good or bad like Unholy Strength or Dead Weight).  It will also be good when used in response to a removal spell or ability, leaving no legal target for said spell.  When used on a token however, it is just plain gone.

We are rather interested in using (abusing?) this mechanic for a standard format build to take to Friday Night Magic gaming.  At first, we were thinking about using some shenanigans using Cloudshift and Fiend Hunter.  If you've not seen this in action, then you are in for a bit of a treat.  You play your Fiend Hunter and in response to the creature exile going on the stack, you play Cloushift while this exile ability is on the stack.  The Cloudshift resolves and 'flickers' the Fiend Hunter and upon returning, that creature the Hunter exiled is now permanently exiled and the Hunter is now available to exile a new creature.  Please don't ask us to explain as we are not judges - just casual players but it has to do with objects changing game zones.
Ayywhoos - we wanted something a bit more blunt with this flicker tech.  Specifically, we were looking for any slick 'enters the battlefield' ability which produced additional creatures or enhanced threats on the gametable.  Our first attempt used a bit of mana acceleration to get those nifty Splicer Golems (Blade Splicer, Winger Spicer, etc.) out early and then flicker them for another cheap golem token.  Built into this was a pair of Stonehorn Dignitary to cancel out an opponent's combat step as well as a Shape Anew strategy to cheat out a Blightsteel Colossus.  We did take this for a spin at our local game store, OMG! Games for FNM last week and it failed pretty miserably.

We hit the drawing board again and this time removed the Shape Anew / Blightsteel component to make room for more flicker / splicer fun.  Here's what we came up with . . .

4x Birds of Paradise

4x Abundant Growth
3x Ponder
4x Tempered Steel
4x Blade Splicer
4x Wing Splicer
4x Vital Splicer
3x Vital Splicer
4x Cloudshift
4x Ghostly Flicker

Our very limited playtesting at the kitchen table has been very encouraging and we can see ourselves taking this build to the next level and improving / tweaking it over the next few weeks.  Currently there is NO sideboard developed.  What do you think ? What should stay / what should be replaced ?

Solitary Fiends

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

The crew at MTG Realm received a care package from Wizards of the Coast which included an Avacyn Restored and some booster packs.  Intro Packs are a great way to get your head into the latest Magic the Gathering expansion and be able to take this standard constructed format deck out for a spin at a Friday Night Magic event at a game / hobby store near you.

The Intro Pack we got was 'Solitary Fiends' which is a Blue / Black preconstructed, ready-to-play product from Gathering set Avacyn Restored.  This theme deck focuses mainly on the 'loner' motif.  There are several cards in this newest set which provide an advantage when you have exactly one creature on the game table.

Anywhoos - here's the short video of us doing a dissection and cracking some packs . . .
~
Here's the decklist . . .

Solitary Fiends - Blue/Black
Creatures
Lone Revenant x1 (FOIL)
Havengul Skaab x1
Renegade Demon x2
Marrow Bats x2
Mist Raven x2
Undead Executioner x2
Corpse Traders x1
Fettergeist x2

Crypt Keeper x1
Alchemist's Apprentice x3

Other Spells
Demonic Rising x1
Homicidal Seclusion x1
Into the Void x2
Triumph of Cruelty x1

Essence Harvest x2
Frost Breath x2
Crippling Chill x2
Doom Blade x2
Peel from Reality x2
Tormentor's Trident x2
Swiftfoot Boots x1
Predator's Gambit x1

Land
Swamp x13
Island x11

This loner theme is rather interesting and we will be taking it to task over the next few weeks with other intro packs we've bought.  We were a bit tentative about this strategy but after reviewing the cards at length, we feel that with some very minor changes (accounting for our personal tastes), we can get a lot of fun from this deck.

We like that Demonic Rising orders up a 5/5 flying Demon while Revenant fills your hands with extra cards.  Bonuses are available with enchantment such as the Predator's Gambit aura (+2/+1 and intimidate) and Homicidal Seclusion (+3/+1 and lifelink).  We are thinking of a bit more control here so we do not get too beat up by an opponent's board presence by increasing the number of threat shut-down  cards like Frost Breath and Crippling Chill or perhaps a different bouncer other than Peel from Reality.

We will not likely take this for a spin at a Friday Night Magic Event, chosing a more superior Event deck over this BUT we definitely will be keeping this build together for quite some time for gaming at the kitchen table.

~
Finally,
If you are looking to see what is popular, from the folks over at MTG Mint Card, here are the ten most sold single cards for last month . . .

Champion of Silverheart

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

This Magic the Gathering blog, as you may know, is all about the casual gamer's approach to the standard format with an eye to rock the local Friday Night Magic event at your local gaming store.  We've taken a lot of crazy / kooky builds to our local store, OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario of which most have fallen flat but the important thing was the fun building that pile of 60 cards.  In our post yesterday, we republished from the mothersite, the Top 5 cards of Pro Tour Avacyn Restored as seen at last weekend's Pro Tour Avacyn Restored Barcelona.

One card which we've wanted to build with since we first saw it previewed was the top card as declared in Barcelona - Wolfir Silverheart.  The most straightforward partner for just such a card in our opinion is Champion of Lambholt.  We were huge fans of the Rise of the Eldrazi green common, Aura Gnarlid and that Beast's ability to sneak past unblockable damage on an opponent - you do not often get this sort of unblockable ability in green, so when we do get such a card in a set, we see it as a special treat and need to strategise a standard format build with it.

But what to include ?
One thing we do when shaping a new deck to to lay out all the possible cards which will support the card we do want to see in every hand but these cards will still have to be decent on their own.  We've read and re-read Champion of Lambholt and then went to work.

Firstly, how do we get those +1/+1 counters on.  We
grabbed cards we could think of and laid it all out.  There was a lot of support in green - Travel Preparations, Timberland Gude, Ulvenwald Bear, Hunger of the Howlpack, Increasing Savagery, Blessings of Nature, etc.  Some support in white with good Mike, the lovely Gavony Township land and the red enchantment Curse of Stalked prey.

Secondly, we looked at cheap and  efficient token producers to rack up those +1/+1 counters on Champion of Lambholt.  These are almost all white with the popular cards being Entreat the Angels, Hero of Bladehold, Lingering Souls, Doomed Traveller, Timely Reinforcements, White Sun's Zenith, etc.  Some colourless help was found with Shrine of Loyal Legions.
Lastly, picking and choosing suitable cards amongst the finalists we produced to be a part of the Champion of Lambholt / Wolfir Silverheart team.  The final result was mostly green with a splash of white for Gavony Township.  Avacyn's Pilgrim, Timberland Guide, Wandering Wolf, Increasing Savagery, Somberwald Sage, Ranger's Guile, and others.

We don't want to provide a real list here without some playtesting but can say that after just three games, we've decided that we rather like to include some of the undying tech creatures from the last set.  Cards such as Young Wolf and Strangleroot Geist help trigger (and re-trigger) a creature eotb effect to get a counter on the Champion.

We'll let you know how it goes so stay tuned.  Until then, what would you suggest to include in a standard constructed list featuring Champion of Lambholt / Wolfir Silverheart ??

Barcelona Block

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We all know that MTG Realm is a casual Magic the Gathering blog, but we cannot help ourselves to see what those Magic the Gathering pro-players are doing from time to time, especially after a set release like Avacyn Restored.  Anywhoos, this past weekend, pro-players descended upon Barcelona, Spain to participate in the Pro Tour Avacyn Restored tournament, which featured Avacyn Restored booster draft and Top 8 Innistrad-Avacyn Restored Block Constructed format.

Fellow Canadian Alexander Hayne (associated with Mana-Deprived) built a deck featuring 16 of the new 'miracle' cards and battled other well-known Magic players like Jon Finkel, Joshua Cho, and Gaudenis Vidugiris to take the title of Pro Tour champion.  You can see all the Top 8 Decklists HERE.  What we here at MTG Realm are interested in is what, if any, impact this latest tournament may make on standard constructed and more specifically, what should we expect of the metagame at our local store during Friday Night Magic events.

We think the following article, 'Top 5 Cards of Pro Tour Avacyn Restored', may provide some insight and evaluation of the fresh new cards we've received with the last set and suggest you give it a read.  We are certainly not surprised that Wolfir Silverheart made this Top 5 list - there was an incredible 22 copies in the top eight decklists.  Since the Avacyn Restored spoilers wrapped up, we've been itching to construct a build with Wolfir Silverheart and Champion of Lambholt.  What we were surprised about was the popularity of 'Miracle' mechanic cards.  Only a crystal ball will give us foresight as to whether its popularity in block constructed will transplant into standard constructed.

Righto - let's have a look at their Top 5 picks now.  We've supplemented this list with comments from the Gatherer card database.

#5 : Mist Raven

•  Love this guy. Probably the best blue common in the set. Potential first pick in a draft. Bouncers are always good, and paying an extra Blue to give a Man-o'-War flying? Sold. 5/5. Posted By: Mickacabra
•  So adding 1 gives a Man-o' War or an Aether Adept flying? Not bad at all, and another abusable ETB creature.
On a more facetious note, looks like we now have Storm Crow, Tempest Owl, and Mist Raven... I like the raven. Ravens are awesome. Posted By: Trygon_Predator
•  This card is a lot of fun with Conjurer's Closet.  Posted By: arfentul

#4 : Borderland Ranger

•  Okay on its own, really good with blink effects. Cloudshift him if you have the mana and need land.  Posted By: SyntheticDreamer
•  He's back! And when Ravnica comes back, his brother Civic Wayfinder will join the standard crowd!  Posted By: Binaro

#3 : Bonfire of the Damned
•  The cost isn't that expensive if you think about Bonfire's ideal targets. The only time you'd want to sweep the board is when there are many creatures, which often time are weenies with 1~2 toughness. Wildfire was a successful deck type utilizing heavy artifact mana and achieves 6+ mana by turn 2~4, the same could be applied here.  Posted By: Cyberium
•  This is an interesting one - I think it will basically be cast for its miracle cost whenever it can. There are few incentives to hold this card longer because it takes a lot of extra mana at most points to make more out of it and at the very least it's a Blaze on your opponent.  Posted By: djflo
•  This card will see a ton of play. One sided board wipes are Uzra's days status. And in a burn deck, this card is just too good not to play.  Posted By: MindEcho

#2 : Temporal Mastery

•  This thing is going to be so annoying with Brainstorm... And to be quite honest, I'm very surprised that they decided to bring back Time Walk. That card really is the last card I'd expect to see reprinted. Oh well, at least they found a way to balance it out better.  Posted By: Binaro
•  Barring drawing this one turn 1 or 2, at worst its an Explore for blue. How is that bad? If you draw it on turn 4 with a Delver and Geist in play, you can swing for 9 damage, untap, swing for 9 again. How is that bad?  Sure it might be "situational", if you mean its only good 95% of the time.  Posted By: Scormio

#1 : Wolfir Silverheart

•  Pair with another Wolfir Silverheart. Double 12/12's. Get some evasion on them and game is yours.  Posted By: TheWallinator74
•  Outrageous in limited. I'd imagine he'd be crazy in standard as well, paired with Invisible Stalker or Latch Seeker.  Posted By: nopemx6
•  The combo of choice for me is Wolfir Silverheart & Champion of Lambholt.  If the champion was out first (which it should be) you now have an 8/8 and a 5/5, which can't be blocked by anything with less than 5 power. And really, you ought to have brought out a few creatures once Champion of Lambholt is out, so realistically it's more like a pair of 8/8s which are more or less unblockable.  Posted By: ElCarl

AVR Event Decks

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

You may recall our post at waay back on start of April where we spoiled an early image of Avacyn Restored Event Decks - well WoTC Monty gave us the low-down with deck lists in yesterday's Aracana.  Most Magic the Gathering players we've been talking to are not calling it a stellar but most certainly solid.  Let's have a looky-see . . .

Humanity's Vengeance (w/u)
Main Deck - 60 cards
24 lands : 2  Glacial Fortress, 9  Island, 1  Moorland Haunt, 12  Plains

25 creatures : 1  Blade Splicer (R), 4  Fiend Hunter, 4  Gideon's Lawkeeper, 1  Mirran Crusader (R), 3  Nearheath Pilgrim, 2  Nephalia Smuggler, 1  Phyrexian Metamorph (R), 4  Porcelain Legionnaire, 3  Tandem Lookout, 2  Wingcrafter

11 other spells
: 2  Dismember, 1  Divine Deflection (R), 2  Mental Misstep, 3  Oblivion Ring, 3  Righteous Blow

Sideboard : 3  Cathedral Sanctifier, 2  Cloudshift, 2  Inquisitor Exarch, 4  Mana Leak, 3  Negate, 1  Pacifism
~

Death's Encroach (b)

24 lands : 24  Swamp

21 creatures : 1  Cemetery Reaper (R), 2  Crypt Creeper, 4  Diregraf Ghoul, 1  Geralf's Messenger (R), 3  Ghoulraiser, 1  Gloom Surgeon (R), 1  Gravecrawler (R), 4  Highborn Ghoul, 4  Skinrender

15 other spells : 3  Altar's Reap, 3  Despise, 2  Dismember, 2  Doom Blade, 3  Go for the Throat, 2  Lashwrithe  (R)

~

These 60-card decks come with a 15-card sideboard and are perfect for use in Standard play tournaments like Friday Night Magic or Game Day celebrations. They also come with a Spindown life counter and a reusable card box.  Unlike Intro Packs, these 60-card builds are designed to let the player jump straight into a standard-format event with a very decent deck that should be competitive, and for a MSRP of about $25, it's not a bad deal.

Finally,
One suggestion is modify to tast or pimp the above event decklists by heading over to MTG Mint Card and getting additional rares or perhaps even foils.

AVR Top 5s

Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Yesterday, we received our pre-ordered Avacyn Restored cards from MTG Mint Card which came fast and furious from the opposite end of the globe within 48-hours of the official release of this, the newest Magic the Gathering set.

As is our custom here at MTG Realm, we get a deck set (4x) of every Uncommon and Common with each new set, have a few energy drinks and a discussion with the MTG Realm crew over the merits of each with a weight toward standard constructed format.  The result is, based on no particular parameter, our choices for Top 5 Uncommons and Commons - here's a short vid -

~
And here's the recap . . .

Top 5 AVR Uncommons  :
Thunderous Wrath
Emancipation Angel
Favorable Winds
Lightning Mauler
Wolfir Avenger
~

Top 5 AVR Commons  :

Pillar of Flame
Cloudshift
Abundant Growth
Wingcrafter
Scroll of Avacyn

Odd that Red took both top spots this set.  Just remember, these are our choices this week, and as we are fickle and prone to change our minds several times, even mid-sentace, we should revisit standard again within a month to determine if these cards still rock our nerd world.

Avacyn Restored Fat Pack

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

As is our custom here at MTG Realm, with every new Magic the Gathering set release, we head down to our local store, OMG! Games, here in Barrie, Ontario, and pick-up a Fat Pack.  Thursday at midnight we did just that and battled a small crowd at the store and picked up an Avacyn Restored Fat Pack for video dissection.  We've seen a fade of product 'unboxing' videos on YouTube and want to make it clear we don't want to be like that fromage.
Anywhoos -
Here's the vid - our apologies in advance - the program we use Movie Edit Pro 17 from Magix has been great until just recently.  It's been rendering the final video with terribad audio quality (static) where previously it's been just great.  If you can help, eMail us. EDIT : We think we tracked the problem down in the movie setting / audio sample rate program default.  Should be fine next vid - what music do you want next ? Electro, dubstep, edm? - Sorry - no C&W.

OMG! Games  •  www.omggames.ca  •  130 Bell Farm Rd  Barrie, ON, L4M 6J4  •  (705) 721-4263

Righto - Here's our Fat Pack PULLS  :
• Divine Deflection
• Herald of War
• 2x Cathar's Crusade
• Infinite Reflection
• Stolen Goods
• 2x Killing Wave
• Vexing Devil

We think that this is the weirdest pull we've ever had out of a Fat Pack.

~

For a MSRP of about $40, your Avacyn Restored Fat Pack gives you . . .
• Nine booster packs
• Basic Land pack of 80
• Avacyn Restored mural
• Card Storage box

The Avacyn Restored Player's Guide contains a visual encyclopedia of every card in the set, plus play tips and story background information.

Keep Calm Play Magic

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Recently, we had released a series of images on our MTG Realm Tumblr site which, from the feedback we have so far, appears very well received.  It is a series of 'Keep Calm and Play Magic', originally developed by forum user 'pichy 64'.

These are based on an old wartime prop-poster which has has become rather popular (as you can see from our apparel and coffee station here at the MTG Realm office).  Yeah, 'JFK' and the rest of the MTG Realm crew are also Chive fans . . .

Anywhoos Here's a bit of history for those of you interested -

Printed in 1939 by His Majesty's Stationery Office on orders of England's Ministry of Information, "Keep Calm and Carry On" was printed in large numbers along with two related posters, but never posted during World War II as it was intended to be distibuted after a a German invasion of the British Isles.  The posters, bearing the crest of King George VI, were shredded in 1945, with a small number saved in the archives of the Imperial War Museum. There were however a hand-full of posters which found it's way to civilian defence authorities.  It was not to emerge again until 2000, when a tattered copy was discovered lining a box in a secondhand bookstore in Northumberland.

Righto - Here's the MTG image series . . .

~
Next up,
An acquaintance of ours, 'Cam', who in his spare time loves to crunch code.  He took a stab at a Magic: The Gathering - Avacyn Restored Sealed Deck Card Generator.  We think it's cool and ivite you to give it a try as well - linky HERE.

~
Finally,
Tomorrow (Friday) is the official Avacyn Restored Release and OMG! Games and Collectibles, here in Barrie, Ontario will be holding a special Friday Night Magic event.  You could score a sweet looking alt-art Restoration Angel.

OMG! Games is a short drive north of Toronto.

AVR Deck Ideas

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

The Avacyn Restored PreRelease is over and come this weekend, this newest set is to be properly released to eager Magic the Gathering gamers everywhere.  We  have a good idea from the prerelease as to what new cards rocked limited format but many eyes are now fixed to this Friday and what will be a force in standard constructed.

Most players will already have an idea as to what new builds to bring along to Friday Night Magic events or what existing builds will be tweaked with the new Avacyn Restored cards.  Whether to get more mileage with a new soulbond Silverblade Paladin in a Geist / Delver deck, or pimp that infect deck featuring Inkmoth Nexus with Wolfir Silverbond.

There is a lot to consider and we here at MTG Realm are ready with our own derpy deck ideas post- Avacyn Restored to take to our local games store, OMG! Games in Barrie, Ontario.  One build we have at the moment which may give up a slot or two for new cards may be a mono-white tokens.  This silliness generates tokens via Gather the Townsfolk, Lingering Souls, Increasing Devotion and / or White Sun's Zenith (kittehs!).  The second part of the equation is anthem effects, which until now was Intangible Virtue and Honor of the Pure.  There may be room in the 4-drop slot for an Angel of Jubilation which will also provide your non-black critters a non-enchantment +1/+1 pump.  We're not sure how relevant the Angel's second ability (Players can't pay life or sacrifice creatures to cast spells or activate abilities) may be in the standard constructed meta-game, but it certainly will be gravy.  We've call this fatuous focus the 'S.W.A.B.' or the Stoopid White Anthem Build.
Another contemplation to pas along to you is something in green.  Don't worry, we love brewing as much as playing and will get to all sorts of decks in all the colours.  Anywhoos - this green build (we've called 'Wolf Blitzer') has an aggressive profile with a 'can't block' theme.  Cards such as Wandering Wolf, Champion of Lambholt, and Howlgeist have captured our attention with their ability for a conditional unblocakability.   To pump, we've went with hard counters like Hunger of the Howlpack and Increasing Savagery as well as the soulbond-pump effects with Wolfir Silverheart.  To help us get to the finish line, there is mana dorks with Lawnmower Elf and that DFC, Scorned Villager.  Hunter's Insight should put extra cards in your hand.  Alternatively, a Lead the Stampede may also be worth evaluating.
Anywhoos -
What do you see playing in the next couple of weeks after you get your paws on the new cards ?  Use the comment thingy below and pipe in.

~

In other news, the folks over at MTG Mint Card has complete Sets of Avacyn Restored Foil Basic Lands (as well as many others) to pimp that foily awesome deck you want to build.  Check them out.
~

AVR PreRelease

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We want to hear about how your Avacyn Restored PreRelease event went on the weekend.  How did you do? Which cards were you impressed with in your sealed build?  What did you pull?

Anywhoos - we went to the AVR PreRelease on Sunday at OMG! Games and Collectibles, here in Barrie, Ontario and had a blast.  Rares pulled by yours truly CopySix and RStomp of MTG Realm were as follows :

Tamiyo, the Moon Sage, Cavern of Souls, Vexing Devil, Entreat the Angels, Angel  of Jubilation, Somberwald Sage, Burn at the Stake,
Descendants' Path, Divine Deflection, Ulvenwald Tracker, Herald of War, Wild Defiance.

Enough yattering, lets have a look at the video -

CopySix's pool was fairly deep in White and Blue, and a bit thinner in the remaining colours.  We would have rather liked to have played Red / Green but felt it would not quite get us there, so Blue / White it was.

RStomp went with a White / Blue build as well.  After the event and re-evaluating his pool kicked himself for not committing to a Red / White build.

Here's a pic of the collective rares pulled . . .

One last thingy before we sign-off on this post - we suggest you inquire whether your local gaming store will be running an Avacyn Launch Friday Night Magic event.  We'll be headed out to OMG! Games again this Friday to hopefully score a lovely looking foil Restoration Angel.

~
Also of note -
The Avacyn Restored artwork is exceptional - especially the lands.  Upgrade 'em to foils we say.  Check out the great prices at MTG Mint Card and pre-order that foily goodness.
.
