Wish List Wednesday- Art and Furniture

Hi friends...my apologies for no post yesterday...I had a really shit 48 hours so just needed a wee break to be honest.

I won't bore you with the details but real life stuff is slamming the door on unicorn dreaming right now...things are definitely not always sunshine and roses as it were.

Anyhow...as always, I know goodness is just around the corner so time to buck up and thanks the gods that all of my loved ones are healthy and really, that's all the fuck that matters.

And on that note, daydreaming about better days means fantasizing about goodness on my wish list and since it's Wednesday, let's go for some...

Blog Series- Wish List Wednesday

...action.

For this week, I'm still totally obsessing over artwork.

Topsies on my one day list are...

...I'm literally in AWE of this image.

2. This loveliness by Skye Parrott...

...wouldn't it be perfect in a master bath against sheets of wall marble...giant size?

3.  And of course, my girl crush on Stephanie Vovas continues/is great (see the other works of hers I want/am getting here)...just discovered this beauty...

..and I lurv her.

Also quite enjoying her boyfriend...

Outside of art...I've got these guys on the list...

4.  All of these amazingly fabulous pieces from recent/ thanks to my 'I coudn't live without her' friend Christine discovery...Brabbu....

The Mursi rug...

I die over it...like dead die.

And this marble table...

...also afterlife worthy.

Oh and their brass plinthed sofa...

...I wouldn't throw it out of bed for crackers either.

5. And then there's this stuff from my newest 'I saw it in real life and can buy it locally + I want EVERY SINGLE PIECE IN THEIR COLLECTION' discovery, Stellar Works...

Barstools for the new house...but mine in black leather...

These incredible chairs...in front of a fireplace...

And THIS...in #projectdreamhouse kitchen across from the fireplace...

I mean have you ever?

The fabric...the shape...it WILL BE MINE- you heard it here first- no way in China this baby isn't going to belong to me...come hell or high water as it were.

As for the rest, I think it's high time I won the lottery...or landed some type of dream design job that paid large buckets of money...or both.

In the meantime/before I strike it rich, stay close to my Instagram feed over the next few days...peeks of my finished laundry area are a coming.

Smoochballs.

Serpentine Secretary

I can't stop/won't stop with the Craigslist shopping lately. There are so many great finds here and most everything is so incredibly affordable that it's hard to pass a lot of it by. Some things need more work than others though and part of me wonders if it's worth it in those cases.

 photo qqDSC_0550.jpg

Like this secretary I recently picked up from a Craigslist seller. I am so in love with the scalloped, serpentine drawer, but man, does it need some work!

 photo qDSC_0561.jpg

When I came by the seller's house to look at it, I was a little disappointed with the condition of the wood. From the photos, it looked like it was in original condition, but I could see right away in person that it had been painted and then (mostly) stripped and that it needed some love. The wood is pretty dry. The seller gave me really great deal on it though and it was hard to pass by since the shape is so unique.

I think with some cleaning the solid brass flower pulls could be cute. Though maybe on a different piece?

Check out the carved curve of the drawer

I also love the unique leg shape that's so slim from the front and much wider from the side view.

I love tiger oak, but I think this piece would look better painted. If the wood was in better shape, I'd totally fix it up more and keep the wood stain (you know I'm all for wood furniture), but I think this would look better in a painted finish - either a gloss or a chalk paint.

 photo aaaDSC_0548.jpg

I thought I would like it here in the entry, but the curve of the stairs sticks out too much. There's still several feet of clearance, but I think I'll keep my eye out for something with a slimmer profile for here - maybe wall-mounted.

 photo zIMG_8679.jpg

I've actually been thinking it would look really cool in the landing upstairs by the girls rooms, especially if it was painted.

 photo qIMG_8695.jpg

 photo IMG_8699.jpg

I imagine the girls leaving each other fun little notes inside and storing their treasures in the drawers. We've been collecting seashells for a few years now from our different travels (and my parents have been bringing some to the girls too - they went to Ireland and Scotland this month and they brought back some beauties for us) and this little secretary seems like a perfect place to keep the shells.

I know I'll be glad I bought it when I do get around to refinishing the secretary. My threshold lately has been "will I regret not buying this a year from now?" and if I can honestly say yes, I go for it (and then cram it into the garage! ha!). What is your rule?

I'm Thankful For...New and Old Stuff in my House

It was Thanksgiving here in Canada this past weekend...and I had a good one.

Mostly it was super because I spent it with family...duh, they're what I'm most thankful for.

But, this year was also extra beuno because lots of prettiness came together here at the abode.

So if you asked me what I'm thankful for this year, here's the proverbial list...

1. I'm thankful for pretty china that was passed down to me, gold flatware I scored on eBay for a song a few years back, orchids of any and all varieties, and the set of crystal glasses my sweet Nana gifted to us for our wedding...

2. I'm thankful for this vintage table I found at Patina...local goodies that don't require me to incur crappy duty/shipping costs make me happy...

3. This set of black patent leather chairs that I got for such a fabo deal as part of Black Rooster's flash sale...

4. Nicole over at Sketch 42 for helping me discover the joy that is the black sharpie...

5. New furniture arrangements that make you fall in love with old stuff again...

6. An extraordinary carpenter...

...who can look at a picture I show him for inspiration and create this piece of furniture nirvana...

...from scratch...in 4 days.

MIND BLOWN

So yes, Thanksgiving 2013 was a good one...feeling very lucky/grateful these days.

Lavender Sofa Inspiration

I never thought I was much of a purple lover in the past, but I know better than to say that now. For a few years I've been so drawn to almost every shade of purple (except I'm still not a fan of grape purple, like Crayola box purple, in home decor). I loooove lilacs and lavenders and plum and oxblood and cobalt and indigo that lean more purple. They're all so good and so fresh-looking to me. Not a lot of people use purples in their homes, so maybe it's the novelty of the thing, but I mean, come on. How could you not want a sofa that looks just like this? THOSE. TUFTS. ARE. EVERYTHING. EVER.

 photo ScreenShot2013-10-07at103259PM.png

It costs a royal fortune, but wow - what inspiration! I'm painting an old jewelry box lavender this week, partly inspired by this sofa and I love how it's come out so far. I'll be sure to share more soon.

So, tell me how you feel about purple and shades of purple? Am I nuts for thinking about how much a I'd love to have a lavender sofa myself?...

PS - Remember how Julianne Moore only dresses in and decorates with black, white, gray, green and purple....

New John Widdicomb Louis-Style Chairs

I've been having the best luck with thrift stores and vintage furniture shop finds since we moved here! I won't lie, it feels like a super-sweet consolation prize for leaving New York's great vintage shopping scene (which I had been really sad about). It might take a little more work to find the great pieces here - but they do exist and they are cheap. It feels a lot like Delaware did, where people either don't know what they have or they know and don't like it so are willing to part with things for a song. Which is still weird to me because, you know, the internet exists! Why not sell the stuff online? Not that I'm complaining about getting deals!

 photo IMG_6862.jpg

I've lived in lots of different cities at this point and I think the best way to find new sources is to be willing to stop your car everywhere you go. Whenever you're driving, be watching for signs for thrift stores, used furniture and junk shops and even consignment stores. Don't ever judge a book (shop) by its cover (window displays/signage) either. Often times the weird new stuff will be  prominently displayed in the front and the great vintage finds will be tucked in the way back. This exact scenario played out for me a couple of days ago when I was driving around Scottsdale, waiting for my cracked iPhone screen to get repaired (why I don't have any real-time photos of the experience). I saw a consignment store had banners and balloons out front saying they were closing down, so I decided to pop in even though the place looked like it was going to be a major flop in the finds department.

 photo IMG_6847.jpg

I nearly turned right around about three steps into the store. It was almost completely empty except for a handful of oversized Tuscan stuff that is (was??) so popular here. But I kept walking around and found a back room area that had a pretty good selection of vintage things. The owners were moving things out of the room. Apparently they had officially closed down the day before. I did a quick once over and the only thing that really caught my eye was a dining set in the very back corner of the store. Six chairs and a table.

 photo IMG_6849.jpg

 photo IMG_6851.jpg

I asked how much for the set even though I thought I wouldn't take it. Only $50. It was a steal. I went over to take a closer look at the set. The more I looked at the chairs, the more I wanted them. The proportions were perfect and I loved the elongated oval shape of the backs. The tight caning was in perfect condition and I really liked the style of the weave. So simple.

 photo zIMG_6856.jpg

Then I flipped one of the chairs over and saw a flash of a gold name plate. That was a good sign.

 photo IMG_6844.jpg

WHAT THE JOHN WIDDICOMB.

 photo IMG_6839.jpg

No wonder the shape was just perfect and they weighed about a million pounds each. So solid.

I told the sellers I would love to buy the set and asked if they were sure that $50 was enough. While I was asking that, my mind was racing with Do I or Don't I ethical questions about needing to tell them about what I figured was the real value of the set. And then the owner completely put me to ease by saying "Oh, aren't they great? Did you see they're by Widdicomb? I wish more people cared about great mid-century design here. I'd be happy to give them to you for $50 just so I don't have another set to load up on the truck."

 photo IMG_6859.jpg

I still felt a little guilty, but I was also so excited. Find of the century for me! I've been wanting Louis chairs for a long time, but I've been too picky up until now to spend a ton of cash on brand new chairs. I'm so glad I waited. I gave Ali, my sister, the table already since I think we're going to use the old Drexel table like I mentioned before. I think the two styles will pair really nicely together!

The same day I found this cute pair of swivel arm chairs for $30! I love the shape of the arms. They need to get reupholstered, but I think they're going to look amazing in a new fabric. I'm thinking maybe the library?

 photo dIMG_5528.jpg

Since my luck was running so high that day, I also swung into Home Fabrics to look for a vinyl for the Louis chairs. BINGO.

 photo IMG_6869.jpg

Dark gray. Buttery soft. So much like leather in look and feel. Not thin, squeaky or sweaty like most vinyls. And is was only $6.99 a yard!

 photo IMG_6868.jpg

Most anything would be an improvement on the current fabric though. Looks like these chairs got a little face lift in the 80s. Time for some new clothes, ladies!

 photo IMG_6858.jpg

Now to figure out what color I should paint the frames. My mom and I were talking about it and she suggested considering leaving them mostly as-is, just a good cleaning and brightening. I like the idea a lot and it might look good to have something a little more antique-y looking in the room, but I don't want them looking too vintage in the bad way. You know? If I go bright white though, they might look too new and cheap-looking. Black would be a similar result I think, unless I did a chalky, matte paint. But then, fingerprints! I could do a bright color, but I want to paint the lanterns red, so that would be overkill. I was also thinking about stripping the frames and doing sort of a limewash look... Lots to figure out!
